Fashion-palooza in Birmingham this Saturday: Tim Gunn at Lucky AND Sam Edelman at Belk the Summit

The fashionable place to be this Saturday in Birmingham, AL? At the Summit of course. Not only will Tim Gunn be making an appearance in our lovely city, but Belk has arranged for the master designer Sam Edelman himself to visit.

Chanda Temple (another favorite Southern fashion writer) did a wonderful article about Edelman and his upcoming visit. He'll be here to mark his 60th birthday by making a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama, which Belk will be matching.

What a guy!

Southern Men, Style Bloggers - the best!

Ok, I have to admit it, I love to read men's style blogs, especially the ones in the South. There is something so cool, crisp and refreshing about them.

I discovered Scott Alexander at The Cable Knit Charlestonian a few weeks ago and I've been meaning to mention him to you. Here's his link, I think you'll enjoy his take on things. http://www.theckcblog.com/

Belk Spring Beauty Event Showcases Latest Trends & Bright Ideas Saturday & Sunday March 24 – 25
Fun, free makeovers, gifts with purchase, tips galore showcase bright, attention-getting colors for spring & summer

– Nothing marks the beginning of spring more than a new look, a new fragrance and a new attitude, which is why Belk is hosting its annual Spring Beauty Event Saturday and Sunday, March 24 – 25, to start spring off right.  To get the party started, a deejay will rock the beat from noon – 3 p.m. on Saturday at Belk at the Riverchase Galleria.

All day long, shoppers will be treated to the latest trends, newest colors, freshest skincare tips, hottest products and brightest ideas from top brands including Clinique, Lancôme, Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown and many more.

Free makeovers and great gifts with purchase will make Belk’s Spring Beauty Event a must-do for the weekend.

A Few Bright Ideas

Flawless skin is a must-have for spring. Get help from a host of primers and foundations that erase flaws and boost radiance.

A smoky eye is still trend-right. New: the modern cat eye (heavy liner to the outer corner, then a swoop to the left).

Proper hydration (inside and out) will keep skin firm and fabulous.

Bright lips stand up best to spring’s color-drenched apparel. Try a velvety new red, a soft purple, or go bold. Think matte – not gloss.

How to Find Your New Summer Scent

Wear what you like. Citrus, floral, green, woods, rain, aquatic – start with a base note you already love.

Try & travel. Spray a sample on clean skin, then spend some time outdoors. If it still smells good to you at day’s end, it’s a keeper.

Have a favorite eau de parfum? Wear it in a lighter, less concentrated eau de toilette for spring and summer. But what will hubby and the kids do while you shop? Belk has a solution for that also:

Don't you just love these shoes!

Check out the ArtBelles new shoe post!

"These 5 inch heels have a T-strap and are made of pleated chiffon. It’s definitely a call to the wild side! The peep toe makes it a perfect pairing with jeans or a nice dress. The platform heel distributes my weight evently, which makes the shoe extremely comfortable (yeah, I said it!) Take a closer gander at “McKenna–Ivory,” and let me know how much you think she rocks."

Angelina Jolie's right leg? Jennifer Anniston did it way better back in 2011

http://distilleryimage0.instagram.com/aef2b060619a11e1abb01231381b65e3_7.jpg

Oscar Love!

First, let me start by recommending you go right over to Alexis Barton's blog "Same Chic Different Day" and sign up to follow her by email. Very good writer and always so on target with her fashion observances.

Didn't have a chance to watch all of the Oscar's since Chris Hastings of Hot & Hot Fish Club was on Iron Chef America, where he actually WON! But I did get up early to check out all the Oscar Fashion.

One of my favorite sites to check after a big event is Megan Larussa's Southern Femme. She usually puts everything in one big report that you can just scroll through, which is helpful if you're  pressed for time.

Here are a few random Oscar thoughts I had:

Best 70's Virginia Slims Cigarette Commercial flashback: Jennifer Lopez.

That dress grew on me: Michelle Williams:  And she's the only person who could have pulled that off. Lovely gamine.

Solid Gold: Stacey Keibler. She wrestled that gold gown to the mat and won! Loved. That. Dress.

Not Solid Gold: Meryl Streep. Love her, not the dress.

Do you feel ok? That pasty pale gown look has got to go. It doesn't work on anyone.

White isn't always right: With the exceptions of the flawless Gwyneth Paltrow, the delicate Li Bingbing and the effervescent Octavia Spencer, white was  way overdone on the red carpet.

White IS right: For Milla Jovovich. She's my second place top pick for ultimate beauty and glamour.

First Place: Just loved Viola Davis. Everything. Hair. Dress. She's the total package.

Could have been so much better: I love big curvy girls. I'm the curvy sort myself. But I do so wish Melissa McCarthy had received the memo that billowing yards of fabric DO NOT make one look slimmer.

That dress wore her: The winner of this category is a toss up between Emma Stone and her big red floppy bow,

and Angelina Jolie and her floppy contorted right leg.

And with that herky leg shot, I'll sign off for now. Rock it Angie!

Have you seen Carol Mark's great blog?

She's so cute! Her tag line is "Where Dolce & Gabanna meet Smith & Wesson."

If you're in or around Huntsville, or really anywhere, you'll want to bookmark her blog. It's a great read and goes down smooth.

She's a member of the Independent Fashion Bloggers network and a contributor at Deep South Magazine. You'll love it.

Did you see the Shopping Diva's blog on Monday?

Here at the Birmingham Fashion Blog, we also follow fashion writers from other cities and states. We caught up on our reading over the long weekend and had a chance to read Cathi Aycock's blog on Monday and can she ever write! Talk about making me want it, her descriptions do just that. The Tennessean is lucky to have her.

She featured a Vince Camuto bag from Belk in her column Monday, along with the BB Creams. I must try those and soon.
This roomy satchel can do double-duty as a carry-all for work or weekend or a great day-to-day tote. Vince Camuto “Phoebe” satchel in white, black and grapefruit, $325 at Belk.

"Cold Temps and Thoughts of Spring Fashions" by Melissa Nowers

Thought you might like to read some fashion news from Nashville.

Follow the link to read what Style Express blogger Melinda Nowers has to say about Belk's Spring Fashion forecast. http://thestyleexpress.com/2012/01/20/cold-temps-and-thoughts-of-spring-fashions/#comment-2414

"Last week before I left for the mountains, I was kindly invited to Belk’s Spring Preview.  Arlene Goldstein their fashion forecaster, went over Belk’s view of the upcoming season.  They had some great thoughts and fun items picked out to represent their take on Spring 2012.
Reading about the shows last fall, Belk seems to be right on target.  BIG pops of color will be a hit.  The color tangerine will be a major factor, it has slowly been inching forward for a couple of seasons now....."

Green is the new black? Yes, when it's a UAB graduation gown!

Birmingham native Heather N. Caygle has returned from her grad school studies in journalism at American University in Washington D.C. for some R & R and  to participate on the graduation ceremony at UAB. And that makes Green the New Black! At least for Saturday it was.

Here's Heather receiving her B. A. in Communications. (Summa Cum Laude.)

Every time we see Heather around town, she's the height of fashion. And not just fashion for fashion's sake, but a personal fashion that lives and breathes who she is and where she's going. Now that she's in grad school and working as a fellow Bureau of National Affairs in D.C., we don't get to see her as much here in Birmingham. But when we do, WOW, we're always impressed with Heather's style.

That's Heather in the left with her brother Brandon and sister Hope. Heather had on an adorable high-waisted and thin belt cinched dress that absolutely seemed to dance when she moved. Bad photographer that I am, I missed her shoes in the pic, but trust us when we say that they were tres-chic!

Go ahead and set up a Google alert for Heather N. Caygle, because that girl is going places!

Welcome to the Birmingham Fashion Blog!

We love this town and we think we're VERY fashionable on so many different levels. So we'd like you to join us as we celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of Birmingham Fashion!
